Installing jEdit

The jEdit text editor is a software application written in the Java programming language. Thus, you must have a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) virtual machine installed on your computer before installing jEdit. Java version 11 or later is required to run jEdit.

1. If you do not have a version of Java or the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed, visit this site to download and install Java appropriate for your operating system

2. Download the jEdit installer appropriate for your operating system from this site

3. Install the application on your computer as you would any other application.

Windows Installation

Microsoft has changed the way permissions are set when applications are installed system wide. When installing on a Windows computer, you will need to select the option to "Install for an individual user" instead of system wide. This will give you the permissions necessary to install plugins that add functionality to jEdit.
